Current Event#12 Saudi officials ordered the arrest of a female rapper

Will Spratt B Class 2/27/20 Saudi officials ordered the arrest of a female rapper Saudi officials ordered the arrest of a Saudi girl and her crew. “Mecca Girl”, a female rapper from Mecca, had recently made a music video about being a woman from Mecca. The governor of Mecca, which is a prince, said   “[The video] offends the customs and traditions of the people of Mecca and contradicts the identity and traditions of its esteemed population." The prince, named Khalid bin Faisel, also ordered that the singer and her crew should be investigated further. Saudi Arabia has been making improvements in its women's rights laws, such as letting women drive and not be segregated at restaurants. The backlash caused by the music video is evidence that there are still limits to Saudi Arabia’s efforts. My opinion on this issue is that “Mecca Girl” doesn’t deserve to go to jail. I think that she didn’t do anything wrong. The singer is only in trouble because of Saudi Arabia’s,

Current Event#11 Syrian schools and hospitals have been attacked

Will Spratt  B Class 2/26/20 Syrian schools and hospitals have been attacked 21 civilians were killed on Tuesday. Nine of which were children and three of whom were teachers. It happened when multiple schools were hit with airstrikes. The Syrian government is to blame. Syria is at a time of civil war. The Syrian government has been taking seize of many villages and cities that are controlled by terrorists. In the past few months, more than 800,000 people have relocated from territory held by Syria’s opposition. They have been moving because they don’t want to get caught in the crossfire. There is relentless air raids all throughout the cities controlled by the opposition. My opinion on this issue is that the Syrian government shouldn’t be doing this. I understand that they are trying to take their country back. Killing innocent people is not ok though. Bombing the wounded in a hospital full of your own people is not ok. All of those young lives have been lost already. If

Current Event# 10 Violence in India caused by a proposed law

Will Spratt B Class 2/25/20 Violence in India caused by a proposed law Today, at 11:34 in the morning, thirteen people have died in New Delhi conflicts. Another 150 people have been injured because of the violence. Police were dispatched to the affected areas. In previous months, there have been many protests. The new law will make it so asylum-seekers from three different countries will acquire Indian citizenship, only if they aren’t Muslim. Opposing parties have stated that the law is unconstitutional because it bases citizenship on religion and would further marginalize the Muslim community in India. My opinion on this issue is that the law should not be passed. The government is mostly controlled by a Hindu party. I don’t think that they should be making decisions on who to give citizenship by their religion. If India is truly a democracy, then it will not pass the law. It violates freedom of religion. I understand why the Indian government wants to give citizenship to

Current Event #9 CMP Corridor

Will Spratt 1/16/20 B Class Environmentalists Fault Certification of CMP Corridor Environmentalists say the Land Use Planning Commission's decision to certify a proposed power transmission corridor through Maine forests disregards the enormous harm it would do. The proposed corridor would carry hydroelectric power from Quebec to Massachusetts along a route through the largest contiguous temperate forest in the country. Central Maine Power says that the corridor will help cut carbon emissions. But there is no evidence to prove that. "Hydro-Quebec themselves have stated over and over again that this is existing hydropower, that they would build no new facilities,"  My opinion on this issue is that the CMP Corridor will be bad for the environment. It isn’t going to cut carbon emissions. They only said that to make up for destroying a lot of the environment. I know they have lied to the public through political advertising. I get an ad about the corridor

Current Event #8 Donald Trump Impeachment

Will Spratt B Class 12/11/19 The Impeachment of Donald Trump A few weeks ago, the House of Representatives voted to put President Donald Trump on trial to be impeached. The President was impeached formally for abuse of power and obstruction of the House. He allegedly abused his power by using military unlawfully. He was trying to get the newly elected president of Ukraine to pursue investigations about Joe Bidden and his son Hunter. He also wanted them to investigate a conspiracy theory that suggested Ukraine, not Russia, interfered with the 2016 presidential election. My opinion on this is that Donald Trump should be impeached. The president abused his power and he deserves to be punished. Ukraine isn’t in the best position to stand up for themselves because they are currently fighting a war with Russia. Donald Trump only did this for personal gain, not to “Make America Great Again”. Hayes, Mike. “Live Updates: President Trump's Impeachment - CNNPolitics.”

Current Event #7 Australia's Wildfires

Will Spratt 1/13/20 B Class  Australian WildFires In Australia, there is currently a wildfire all over the country. It has been estimated to affect around half a billion animals. According to meteorologists, Australia is experiencing one of its worst droughts in history. Strong winds have made fire and smoke spread more rapidly. Many scientists believe that a major factor in why the wildfires are so out of control is climate change. Even major cities like Sydney and Melbourne have been affected by the fires. The state of New South Wales has been affected the most by the flames. My opinion on this issue is that the wildfires are horrible for everybody involved. The wildlife in Australia can’t even really run away from the fires. I really think that climate change has a big factor in the intensity of the fires. We know what our carbon emissions do the environment but yet we still don’t change anything. I know to change our technologies to an eco-friendly power source

Extension Current Event

Will Spratt 11/13/19 B Class Chocolate companies are employing child laborers Chocolate companies like Hershey, Lindt, and Godiva are employing child workers. This was shown in a new ranking by activists last week. Godiva was rated the worse, and smaller companies did much better. Mars and Nestle did better than Hershey and Lindt. Most of the world’s cocoa is grown by poor family farmers in the West African countries of Ghana and Ivory Coast, where an estimated 1.6 million children work in the industry. While the companies are trying to fix the problem, they aren’t really doing enough. Suppliers of these companies still continue to exploit the children by paying them very low wages.  My opinion on this issue is that the chocolate companies shouldn’t be exploiting the kids in Africa. The children are very poor so they are forced to work. The chocolate companies don’t have to pay them much at all, so the labor saves a lot of money. But what’s more important, saving
